Emergency Cleaning: Unplanned Guests?

Cleaner quickly making a bed for last-minute guests

The in-laws land at four. A rental inspection got moved up. Someone said yes to hosting on Saturday and mentioned it on Friday night. Emergency cleaning is a real category of work, and the honest version of it isn't magic - it's triage plus knowing which rooms visitors actually judge.

How fast is realistic

From our base in Mentone we can usually be on site within 2-3 hours for the closest suburbs - Mentone, Parkdale, Cheltenham, Moorabbin and Mordialloc - and same-day for most of the wider bayside and south-east area, depending on the day's bookings. Weekends included. The honest constraint isn't willingness, it's whether there's a gap in the run.

So the single most useful thing you can do is call rather than email. A phone call or a WhatsApp message gets an answer in minutes; an enquiry form sitting in an inbox doesn't help anyone with a four-hour deadline.

What we prioritise when the clock is short

With two or three hours, spreading effort evenly is the wrong strategy. The order that actually works:

  1. Bathroom. Non-negotiable and first. It's the one room every guest uses alone, with time to look around.
  2. Kitchen surfaces. Benches, sink, stovetop, bin. Not inside the oven - nobody is opening your oven.
  3. Entry and hallway. First impression, and it sets what people assume about the rest.
  4. Living areas. Clear surfaces, dust, vacuum, straighten.
  5. Guest bedroom and the smell of the place. Fresh linen, open windows, air moving.

Everything else - inside cupboards, window tracks, skirting boards, the study nobody enters - waits for a proper clean later. Telling you that is part of the job; a cleaner who promises a full deep clean in two hours is going to deliver a rushed version of everything instead of a good version of what matters.

What to do in the 30 minutes before we arrive

The things that make a house feel clean fastest

If you're doing it alone against the clock, this is the highest-return order: smell, then floors, then flat surfaces, then the bathroom mirror and taps. Smell is first because it's processed before anything visual - a stuffy room reads as unclean even when it's spotless. Open windows, empty the bin, and take the kitchen rubbish outside before you do anything else.

One thing worth knowing for next time

Emergency cleaning is always more expensive per unit of result than a regular booking, because the fixed setup cost is the same whether we're there for two hours or five. Households on a regular fortnightly clean rarely need an emergency one - the baseline never drops far enough. It's not a sales line so much as an observation: the people who call us in a panic are almost always the people who don't have a routine.
