How Often Should You Deep Clean and Regular Clean?

Almost every home we visit around Mentone and the bayside suburbs is on a fortnightly house cleaning rhythm. That's the honest average: most Australian households do a proper tidy-and-clean every one to two weeks, and squeeze in kitchen and bathroom touch-ups between. That rhythm works - for regular cleaning. The problem is that people assume it also handles the deep cleaning, and it doesn't. They're two different jobs with two different schedules.

The difference in one line

Regular cleaning - domestic cleaning, in the trade's language - manages what a room produces this week: crumbs, dust on flat surfaces, soap scum, bins, floors. Deep cleaning removes what has accumulated over months in places nobody touches weekly: grease inside rangehood filters, grout that has gone grey, dust behind the fridge, build-up in window tracks and skirting board edges.

If a home feels tidy but still smells faintly stale, that's almost always the gap between the two.

Regular cleaning: what most people actually do

• Weekly (or fortnightly): kitchen benches, stovetop, sink, bathroom, toilet, mirrors, dusting flat surfaces, vacuuming, mopping, bins
• Every visit, but often skipped: light switches, door handles, tap bases, the outside of cupboard doors - the high-touch spots that pick up the most residue

Fortnightly is fine for a couple with no pets. Weekly is closer to realistic for a family with kids, a shedding dog, or a home office that's in use five days a week. Small offices and studios generally need the kitchenette and bathroom weekly no matter how few people are in - shared spaces get grubby faster than the headcount suggests.

Deep cleaning: the recommended intervals

• Every 3 months: oven interior, rangehood filter, fridge interior, behind and under appliances, shower screen and grout treatment
• Every 6 months: skirting boards, window tracks and sills, ceiling fans and light fittings, inside cupboards and the pantry, upholstery
• Every 6-12 months: professional carpet steam cleaning - closer to 6 months with pets, allergies, or in a home near the bay where humidity keeps carpet damp longer
• Yearly: curtains and blinds, mattress deep vacuum and rotation, wardrobe clear-out and wipe-down, garage and laundry reset - this is the traditional spring cleaning list, and spring is genuinely the right time for it in Melbourne, before pollen season peaks

The oven is the one people put off the longest, and it's the one that makes the biggest visible difference the day it's done.

Signs you're overdue for a deep clean

• Grout has visibly darkened, or shower corners show mould even after a regular clean
• The oven smokes or smells slightly when you preheat it
• There's visible dust on ceiling fan blades or on top of door frames
• It's been more than three months since a move-in, a renovation, or the last professional clean - a one off deep clean resets the baseline before regular visits take over
• The place looks fine but doesn't smell fresh

Why the schedule beats the effort

Deep cleaning on a schedule is always cheaper than booking deep cleaning services in Melbourne once it finally looks bad. Grease that's three months old wipes off; grease that's two years old has to be dissolved and scraped, which takes hours instead of minutes. The same is true for grout, oven glass and carpet. Booking a quarterly reset and keeping the weekly routine light is genuinely less total work than either one alone.
