How Professional Cleaning Improves Indoor Air Quality

Most people picture air pollution as something that happens outside, near a highway. The research points the other way. Australians spend roughly 90% of their time indoors, and the US Environmental Protection Agency has repeatedly found indoor air to be two to five times more polluted than the air outside - occasionally far worse. Which means the air you actually breathe is mostly your home's air.

Where the pollutants come from

Very little of it arrives as visible dirt. The main indoor sources are:

• Settled dust - the reservoir. House dust is a mix of skin cells, textile fibres, soil tracked in on shoes, pet dander and, importantly, dust mite allergen. It doesn't stay settled; every footstep and every dry dusting cloth puts a share of it back into the air.

• Mould spores - from bathrooms, window reveals, and anywhere condensation sits.

What it doesn't do

Cleaning is not a cure for asthma or hay fever, and no honest cleaner should imply it is. It reduces the load; it doesn't remove the trigger from the world. If a home has an active moisture problem - a leaking shower base, rising damp, no working extraction fan - cleaning will keep resetting it and the mould will keep coming back. The practical version

• Damp-wipe rather than dry-dust, and change the cloth between rooms
• Vacuum with a HEPA-filtered machine, slowly - speed is the most common mistake
• Wash bedding weekly at 60°C or above; that's the temperature that kills dust mites
• Run the bathroom fan during and for 20 minutes after a shower
• Keep indoor humidity in the 30-50% range where you can
• Book a deep clean seasonally, and time one just before spring if anyone in the house reacts to pollen
